A Traveler’s Guide to Singapore’s Premier Airport

A Traveler’s Guide to Singapore’s Premier Airport

The National Library Board of Singapore states that Changi, situated at the easternmost part of Singapore, is named after the Chengai tree which was abundant in the district. Notable places in the region include Changi International Airport, Changi Prison, and Changi Village, with Changi Point as its focal point.

When you think of ‘Airports’, the mind takes us to the hard work of getting to and from the airport, the check in , security lines and lots of walking. No, Changi International Airport is not your typical airport. Its a destination in itself ! Consider this question: “Have you ever encountered an airport where the local population visits solely for the purpose of exploring the airport, without carrying their luggage, passports, and boarding passes?” Yes, Changi airport is that good! It’s more than an airport. It’s a destination and an attraction in itself. So, let’s try and understand the endless possibilities of exploring the various places, attractions, events, and experiences within this airport, which has been voted the best airport in the world every year for over a decade.

  • The Airport and Terminals:

With the inauguration of Terminal 1, Changi airport started operations in 1981 and, over the last four decades, has grown exponentially to add three more terminals (T2 in 1991, T3 in 2008, and T4 in 2017). One of the most distinctive features of the Airport is its unique design. The terminals are designed to be visually stunning, with modern and clean architecture, beautiful landscaping, and ample natural light. Especially, Terminal 3, which opened in 2008, is noteworthy for its eco-friendly design. The terminal has a large, open-air garden, a sky-lit atrium, and a massive waterfall cascading down four stories, providing travellers with a serene and calming atmosphere. Also, the airport is renowned for its efficiency, cleanliness, and friendly and helpful staff. The airport has won numerous awards for its service, including Skytrax’s “World’s Best Airport” award every year since 2013.

  • Exploring the Airport:

Having the option to choose from several free or inexpensive things to do, Changi Airport is a perfect destination for you to spend an extended period. So, if you are on a layover at the airport or want to explore it during your Singapore visit, this list of experiences at the airport will be your best guide.

  • Gardens and Parks: Yes, you read it right; there are multiple gardens and parks within the Airport building. Some of these are indoor parks; some are outdoors, some are free to enter, and some have entry fees. But, the common factor that connects them all is that they are all within your reach directly at the airport building itself. Below is the list of best gardens at the airport in our opinion.
  • Butterfly Garden (T3): Home to over 1000 butterflies from several species, this garden is situated at levels 2 and 3 of terminal 3 and is open 24 X 7.  It also houses a 6-meter-tall waterfall and various plants, including Indian Holly and Egyptian Star Cluster, giving you an immersive nature experience right in the middle of a busy airport terminal.  We recommend spending upto an hour exploring this beautiful garden with free entry to all.
  • Enchanted Garden (T2): Housed at level 2 of the terminal, this garden hosts trees such as the Tasmanian Tree Fern.  It is designed to give visitors an enchanting experience of a garden that comes to life through sights and sounds using Motion sensors and fibre-optic lighting. At the heart of the park is a set of four glass sculptures in the shape of bouquets displaying freshly cut flowers daily.
  • In addition to these, you can explore other gardens such as Sunflower garden(T2), Orchid Garden and Koi Pond (T3), Crystal Garden (T3), and Steel in Bloom (T4).
  • Take a ride down “The Slide” (T3):

Are you feeling adventurous and looking for a one-of-its-kind experience? Look no further than the world-renowned “Slide” at terminal 3. This 12-meter-high slide starts at level 1 and takes you down to Basement 3. However, you need to be within the specified height limits to be allowed on the slide. In addition, you need to be a Changi rewards member or spend a minimum amount  anywhere at the airport to redeem a ride at the Slide. There is a limit to the number of rides allowed per person. So, plan accordingly in advance and enjoy this adventure.

The Entertainment Deck on Terminal 2 offers a variety of games and activities, including Xbox, PlayStation, and Kinect games, as well as a movie theatre that plays films around the clock. It is an excellent option for you if you need to pass some time before your next flight or you are travelling with children who need to burn some energy.

  • Watch a movie at the Amphitheatre (T3):

Are you a cinephile and want to catch a quick movie before your next flight or before entering the city of Singapore?  Why bother watching it on your small phone or tablet screen when T3 has a state-of-the-art theatre showing several movies 24 X 7, that too free of cost? You can also plan to catch the telecasts, live shows, events, and sports in this round-the-clock attraction. So, don’t think twice before enjoying the comfortable chairs and high-def picture quality here.

  1. Take Advantage of the Free Wi-Fi: The airport offers free wi-fi access in all its public and transit areas. You need to scan your passport at a kiosk to get the necessary code, valid for a fixed time.
  2. Pack a Change of Clothes: If you are travelling on a long-haul flight to or from Singapore, you should get a quick shower before boarding your next flight. The airport has several lounges that provide a shower facility, which you can make the most of.
  3. Be Mindful of the Time: Changi Airport, with its endless attractions and vast area, can lead to you spending more time exploring it, resulting in you missing the flight. To ensure a smooth experience, you can set the alarm on your phone or watch to keep yourself in check.
  4. Book a Transit Hotel: If you have a long layover and need sleep, consider booking a transit hotel. Changi Airport has several transit hotels located within the airport, so you can rest and freshen up before your next flight. These hotels typically allow you to book the rooms for 6-hour multiples at once. Transit hotels tend to get fully booked well in advance so make sure you book atleast 1 month before your trip.
  5. Use the Skytrain: Though we recommend exploring the multiple aspects of the airport complex by foot, it is understandable that sometimes walking for a more extended period may not be comfortable. In such a case you can use the services of the sky train. Also known as the Automated People Mover (APM), it is a driverless train system that connects Terminals 1, 2, and 3 and the Jewel. The most significant advantages of using this service include its efficient service, accessibility, ease of use, and breathtaking views.
  • Avail the drinking water facilities: Water is readily available at Changi Airport in Singapore. Passengers can easily find water dispensers throughout the airport, and most restaurants and cafes also offer complimentary drinking water. In addition, there are water fountains located in the public areas of the airport. It is  important to note that Singapore’s tap water is safe to drink, so you can refill your water bottles at the airport’s water dispensers without any concerns about water quality. In fact, Changi Airport has been recognized for its efforts in sustainability and reducing plastic waste, so bringing a reusable water bottle is encouraged.

  • Make use of the Free Trolleys: One feature that makes Changi Airport stand out is the free trolleys available for passengers to use throughout the airport. These trolleys can be found at various locations around the airport, including the arrival and departure halls, baggage claim areas, and car parks. They are readily available and easy to use, making it convenient for passengers to transport their luggage around the airport.

The trolleys are designed to be sturdy and durable, able to carry a significant amount of weight. They are also equipped with brakes, which makes keeping them in place while loading or unloading your luggage easy. Also, unlike other airports where passengers are required to pay for the use of trolleys, Changi Airport provides this service at no charge. This is especially helpful for travelers who are on a tight budget or have already spent a lot of money on their trip
